In fact, it's difficult to go through a single day without using one of his many important discoveries. Having received 1093 patents in his lifetime, Edison helped us communicate better through his improvements to the telegraph and telephone. He lit our houses with electricity by designing and building the first indoor electric lighting system. Edison House is a social club, reimagined for those looking to energize and elevate their day-to-day experience.

It was also one of the areas Thomas Alva Edison called home during the years he lived and worked in Louisville. Louisville's Thomas Edison House is located in historic Butchertown, a neighborhood which has been known as the center of meat production in this city for over 200 years. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Gale Mastrofrancesco of Wolcott raised concerns about the bill allowing municipalities to penalize people who merely observe a street takeover but who are not participating in or endorsing it. 200 West in downtown Salt Lake City, opened its membership to the public — and the waiting list quickly grew to 3,000 people deep. On the second floor, you step into the club’s second restaurant, The Atrium, which Boyack described as an elevated sports bar concept. There’s also a private karaoke lounge with a ceiling hung with disco balls, which can be booked by members through the Edison House app. Edison House Illuminates is a charitable initiative powered and led by Edison House members.

Moving through Salt Lake City’s buzzy downtown area—past the bustling restaurants, lively clubs and lofty living spaces—you’d be forgiven for not immediately noticing a new addition to the neighborhood. Recently built along 200 West and just a block east of Pioneer Park, is a modern, black steel-and-brick building designed with expansive windows overlooking its urban setting. Instead, a polished metal E on the entry wall discreetly identifies the three-story structure as Edison House, the city’s newest social club created by brothers and Salt Lake natives Charlie Cardon and George Cardon-Bystry. The duo tapped HKS to design the structure and Okland Construction to build it. On Wednesday, the House also removed a part of the bill that would have required the governor’s budget office to administer, within available appropriations, a program to award municipalities grants to enforce the law. It was taken out due to Democratic leaders recently disclosing that they wouldn’t formally adjust the preliminary $26 billion budget approved last June for the 2024–25 fiscal year. However, it is unclear what criteria law enforcement across the state’s municipalities would use to make that determination. It would allow municipalities to impound vehicles involved in street takeovers until fines are paid. Amie is a lifelong dancer, avid concert goer, and forever a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

What's a Canadian House Hippo?

house hippo

The House Hippo was meant to be a reminder to children that not everything they saw on television was real, and that they should always question what they see. In the video, a house hippo is shown foraging for crumbs of peanut butter toast in a kitchen, escaping from a house cat, and making a nest. MediaSmarts is launching the campaign ahead of Media Literacy Week (October 7-11), a national event that includes over a 100 media literacy activities across Canada. Canadians will also have access to free Break the Fake resources including a workshop, tip sheets, educational videos, lesson plans for teachers and more, for use during Media Literacy Week and beyond. As they’re shy, they wait for you to go to bed,  then they venture out in search of food and water, and materials for their nests.

Their favourite foods are chips, raisins and the crumbs from peanut butter on toast, and they sometimes make a rare appearance at breakfast for the chance to find their beloved peanut butter on toast crumbs. The house hippo was a part of many of our childhoods (if you are a certain age). Now, it’s bringing awareness to #BreakTheFake and teach kids about digital media literacy. They are incredibly shy, so unless they’re really craving PB toast crumbs, or you’re up in the middle of the night, you’ll likely go your whole life without ever seeing one.

The Canadian House Hippo: An Introduction

Misinformation is running rampant online, and with the advancements of AI, images and text can be faked. Today, the House Hippo may not be as prominent as it once was, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of Canadians. The House Hippo is a nostalgic reminder of a simpler time in Canadian culture and a symbol of the power of creativity and responsible advertising.

You can even by hand-made House Hippos, house hippo art prints, t-shirts and much more. The North American House Hippo is officially listed as being “found across Canada and the Northeastern United States”, though it’s a well known fact that they primarily live up here in the True North. Myself and 37 million other Canadians are lucky to call the True North our home.

The House Hippo was cute, funny, and relatable, and it resonated with Canadians of all ages. The House Hippo was also successful in achieving its goal of promoting critical thinking among children. The CCA reported that after the House Hippo commercials aired, there was a significant increase in the number of children who questioned the advertisements they saw on television. The House Hippo also serves as a reminder to question what we see and to be critical of the media we consume.

They are generally pretty timid, but they will protect themselves if provoked by you pet cat or dog, or whatever else is lurking in your house at night. All of it pays homage to the original public broadcast, which shows the sweet little hippo scavenging for crumbs of peanut butter toast and running away from a house cat. The commercial was created in order to educate children about critical thinking, to teach them not to accept everything that they see on television and to question what they see. The one minute long commercial, which was the subject of a television public service announcement, was produced in the style of Hinterland Who’s Who, the Canadian educational series that ran in the 1960s and 1970s.

You can also lower your rates by shopping smart when looking for your home. Purchasing a home farther from the coast and fault line and in an area with less crime can improve your rates. If the sound of sirens doesn't bother you, purchasing a home close to a first-responder station like a police or fire department can also help lower your rate.

Warwick Castle: a great day out that you’ll love whatever the weather!

Proximity to the coast, the fault line or an expensive zip code will most likely raise your rates. So if there’s any chance you’ll run into Kim Kardashian at your local supermarket, you might want to prepare to pay a little more. You won't need an old newspaper for this one - it's recent enough that youtube will do. In 1999, The Concerned Children's Advertisers released a 60 second advertisement as part of the Break The Fake campaign, with the intent of educating children about critical thinking in regards to advertising. "It didn't receive a ton of attention at the time, it didn't win industry accolades and it didn't make us famous. It's only now that the kids who saw that ad are online and in advertising that we're getting the impact of it." But what happens when it feels like we live in an age where everything is like the house hippo?

The new ad is part of a media literacy campaign called Break the Fake. I don’t feel as though it’s getting better or easier to navigate misinformation online. I don’t have the answers, but it’s evolving, quickly, and education is a great starting point. The House Hippo may not have been real, but the science behind the commercials was very real.

The original campaign was created to teach kids to think critically about what they see on TV, and the tiny hippo became a beloved Canadian symbol. Break the Fake, a campaign launching October 1st, is bringing the hippo back to encourage people of all ages to check information they see online. The House Hippo has also inspired TikToks, it has a page on Urban Dictionary and there is even a band called House Hippo that honours the animal that we all loved, and all hoped was real enough to find in our own homes.

Soon he decided to become a real telegraph operator, and with the help of one of the station masters, he learned this skill. He became a telegrapher at the age of 15 and began working for Western Union in such places as Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Memphis. In 1866, at the age of 19, Thomas Edison came to Louisville as an employee of Western Union whose office was then located at the Southwest corner of Main and Second Street. After a brief excursion to New Orleans in August 1866, he returned to work in Louisville. The Thomas Edison House is located in historic Butchertown Kentucky, a neighborhood which has been known as the center of meat production in this city for over 200 years.

In addition to trying to teach himself Spanish, he developed a new style of penmanship. His intention was to write characters that were blunt and vertical, suppressing all curls and fancy loops -- a simple manuscript-print that was more legible and would quicken his speed as a telegraph operator. In 1914, Henry and Clara Ford, along with their son Edsel, visited Fort Myers at the invitation of Thomas Edison. They enjoyed the visit so much that two years later, Ford purchased the home adjacent to the Edison Winter Estate. The two-story riverfront home was built in the Craftsman architectural style.

He says the number of active members permitted in the club at the same time will depend on the building’s actual capacity as opposed to deliberate exclusivity. A rooftop bar, pool, sky lounge, and banquet/ballroom occupy the top level. It a wonderful place to watch the sun set over Great Salt Lake, and with the open views to the sky, you can appreciate the changing colors of the clouds. The second-level piano room is certainly a gem, with its plush velvet upholstered walls, leaf-patterned custom carpet, lux furnishings and a hand-painted vintage piano. “It’s my favorite space,” admits Cardon, who is an accomplished pianist and can sometimes be found tickling the ivories in the intimate gathering space.

The Ford’s sold The Mangoes in 1945 to a private family who then sold the estate to the City of Fort Myers in the late 1980s. Edison’s Study located behind the Moonlight Garden, was built in 1928 after Edison’s 1886 Electric Laboratory was moved to Henry Ford’s museum, Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. Originally the Guest House was owned by a business partner of Thomas Edison.

Join their mailing list to receive exclusive updates and be the first to know about their upcoming projects. Two of the original members of Pablo Cruise, Cory Lerios and David Jenkins, joined us on The Morning Show to talk about their journey that began 51 years ago and the fact that there really isn’t a band member named Pablo Cruise. As 1970s breezy as the t-shirts which bore their name, ruled adult contemporary with its jazz-influenced pop sound. Despite some drawbacks of technology, Lerios shared that there are some benefits that modern technology brings when it comes to creating new music. Brian Kachejian was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx. He is the founder and Editor in Chief of ClassicRockHistory.com.

With its vibrant rhythms, dynamic instrumentation, and captivating vocals, “I Go to Rio” quickly became a crowd-pleaser. Pablo Cruise is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1973. Known for their smooth and melodic tunes, the band gained popularity during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their music combines elements of pop, soft rock, and funk, creating a unique and infectious sound that continues to captivate audiences to this day. “The record labels really got behind the bands they signed. They subsidized the bands on tour, paid for their tours, really promoted the band, but it was through live, it was like, being out getting out and about and also having a really heavy duty promotion team pushing new records are out.

The band members’ diverse musical backgrounds contribute to their unique sound, creating a captivating blend of different styles and genres. If there is one song that always got the audiences up and dancing at Pablo Cruise concerts, it is the excellent track “I Go To Rio.” The song was released on the Worlds Away album. The song was written and originally recorded by Peter Allen.

They have shared the stage with musicians like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Toto, further solidifying their place in the music industry. Around 1996, Jenkins and Cockrell reunited once again as Pablo Cruise, but Lerios and Price were unable to rejoin at the time. Keyboardist Kincaid Miller and drummer Kevin Wells (ex-Clover) were brought in to replace them, and percussionist James Henry also appeared with the band as an occasional special guest from 1999 to 2008. Additionally, second guitarist Kenny Emerson and two additional backup singers, Regina Espinoza and Carolyn, were also recruited (from 1999 to 2002) for added stage attraction.

Almost as if technology has become a buffer or a hurdle between the artist and marketing their work, specifically for smaller artists. Pablo Cruise derived their name from a fictional character who was a “freewheeling guy” that they created as a mascot for the band. The name reflects the band’s desire to embark on a musical journey and explore different genres. In the meantime, Cory Lerios worked on movie and television scores, providing the music for the popular 1990s series Baywatch, among many others. To stay updated with Pablo Cruise’s latest news, releases, and tour dates, you can follow them on their official website and social media platforms.

The band consists of David Jenkins (guitar, vocals), Cory Lerios (keyboards, vocals), Bud Cockrell (bass, vocals), and Steve Price (drums, percussion). With their combined talents and harmonious vocals, Pablo Cruise quickly rose to prominence in the music scene. Jenkins moved on to join country rockers Southern Pacific in 1987, alongside former Doobie Brothers members Keith Knudsen and John McFee and Creedence Clearwater Revival bass player Stu Cook.
